AODA
What is AODA?
AODA stands for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005). It is a provincial law in Ontario designed to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities. The goal is to make Ontario fully accessible by 2025.
Why is AODA Training Required?
AODA training is essential to help employees understand the principles of accessibility and how to interact appropriately with individuals who have disabilities. Many people assume disabilities are only physical or visible, but the AODA recognizes a broad range of disabilities—including mental health, cognitive, learning, and non-visible conditions.
Through AODA-specific customer service training, employees learn how to communicate respectfully and effectively with customers of all abilities. For example:
-
When approaching someone with a visual impairment, introduce yourself before speaking.
-
Always address the individual directly, not their guide dog or service animal.
-
Let the person know if you need to step away during a conversation.
-
For those with mobility disabilities, do not touch their mobility aids or equipment without permission.
These practices ensure inclusive, respectful, and dignified service for everyone.
Who Needs AODA Training?
AODA training is required for:
-
All paid employees, whether full-time, part-time, or contract
-
New and existing staff who interact with the public or third parties on behalf of the organization
-
Anyone involved in providing goods, services, or facilities to the public or other organizations
